When we tied up to the marina dock during our sea trial, we could see our boat icon neatly rafted against the high-res photo overlay of that very dock. It was awesome. In fact, Navionics Platinum+, released in January, makes navigation safer and easier than ever. When the charts show a channel, Platinum+ can show you where the real deep-water channel is. Chances are good it has shifted since the last survey. The new cartography offers high-definition, geo-referenced satellite and high aerial top-down photography overlays with up to four times higher resolution (25cm per pixel) than previous Platinums; sharp panoramic pictures of marinas, ports, passes and other locations in XGA (1024 x 768) resolution; and more detailed 3-D contours and advanced bottom profiles. The entire US Coast Pilot guide has also been geo-referenced, making it easier for boaters to access this information. Platinum+ is available in Navionics' familiar XL3-size regions and comes on an 8-gigabyte SD or CF digital media card. Look for various chart plotter manufacturers to announce compatibilities early in 2008.
