When MapTech introduced the touch-screen capabilities of its i3, the unit immediately became a one-of-a-kind plotter. But MapTech didn't rest on its laurels. Besides the touch screen, which did away with buttons, keys and dials, MapTech now offers several other add-on features you can integrate into the i3 and its 12- or 15-inch screens.
Once such feature - talk screen - lets you speak to your chart plotter via a headset, causing the system to respond to basic commands such as zoom, pan, call up charts, switch to sonar, radar, or split screen with a chart, and a host of other basic navigation functions. This feature adds about $499 (all prices MSRP) to the price of your i3; it includes software and a headset/mike. Other add-on functions available for the i3 include the ability to display engine data ($999); a touch-control tilt-and-pan camera mode that can control up to four cameras ($1,199); a trip-planning function that allows you to design a trip at home on your desktop PC and enter the info via USB to your i3 ($299); an entertainment module that shuts off when the boat is underway ($499); and more. The basic 12-inch i3 costs $12,999 ($14,999 for the 15-incher). Radar, communications/weather and 3-D sounder functions are also available.
