Packaged in a rugged, waterproof housing that floats, Garmin's GPSMAP 78 series handheld GPS units weigh 7.7 ounces, sport a 2.6inch, color touch-screen LCD display with backlight and offer a range of features based on the model. The flagship GPSMAP 78sc ($549.99) and the 78s ($449.99) come with a three-axis, tilt-compensated electronic compass - which shows a heading even at a standstill - and wireless data transfer between compatible units. The 78sc also features preloaded BlueChart g2 cartography for the coastal United States. The units run up to 20 hours on two AA batteries and offer 1.7 GB of internal memory and a microSD-card slot for optional map data.
