With the increased popularity and accessibility of kayak fishing come products such as MotorGuide's new VariMAX Digital Kayak trolling motor. The special-model V45 is a 12-volt, 45-pound-thrust motor that allows precise speed control with 312 times more run time from a battery charge than common five-speed transom-mount motors, MotorGuide says. The motor's BluVis gauge indicates speed settings and battery-charge status at a glance. The 20-inch stainless-steel shaft allows most anglers to mount the motor at the bow or on the transom of a kayak or any small boat. The VariMax is built on MotorGuide's 312-inch lower unit and comes with the brand's Great White corrosion protection for saltwater use. The motor retails for less than $300.
