Kingfish-tournament anglers, who use downriggers extensively, have been eliminating the harmonic hum of their steel cables by spooling downriggers with mono, Cannon says. So the company designed a new stainless-steel spool to withstand the stresses that mono can exert as it expands and absorbs water. Traditional plastic spools too easily break under that pressure.
Cannon also colored its three new tournament-series models white, which reflects rather than absorbs light. Another exclusive feature for the top-of-the-line Mag 20 DT/TS unit is compatibility with Humminbird's CannonLink System Module, which allows control of up to six downriggers through an electronic network on a Humminbird fish-finder display.
The Mag 20 DT/TS retails for $999.99 and includes features such as a high-speed, 250-feet-per-minute retrieve; Short Stop control; and Adjustable Positive Ion control to regulate the electrical field around the boat. The Mag 10 DT/TS costs $699.99 and offers the same retrieve rate and Short Stop control. The Uni-Trol 10 TS costs $399.99 and comes with a clutch/brake system for controlled descent.
