Southern California-based Avet Industries has announced a significant change in big-game-reel technology with its T-RX50W Quad -- a two-speed, lever-drag reel sporting four discs instead of one or two. Avet is the first company to successfully create and patent a four-disc drag system, its spokesman says. With two titanium discs on each side of the reel and a total of four dry-carbon-fiber brake pads, the Quad delivers 100 pounds of pressure at strike and 116 pounds at full setting while maintaining the free-spool capability to lob a live bait to a hungry fish. The additional discs provide more surface area for braking. And while that can create more drag-destroying heat, Avet's positioning of the discs on the drag plates rather than the spool, together with the combination of carbon fiber and titanium, create a successful formula, the company says. The Quad also
features a fully machined, one-piece aluminum frame and side plate; inside are six rubber-sealed, stainless-steel ball bearings and two-speed stainless-steel gears that provide speed at a gear ratio of 3.2:1 and power at 1.3:1.
