Fish For A Cure Tournament Raises Over $150,000 For Cancer Research

In its Fifth Year, Annapolis-Based Nonprofit’s Fishing Tournament Supports the Anne Arundel Medical Center’s Geaton and JoAnn DeCesaris Cancer Institute

Annapolis, Md. – Nov. 12, 2012 – The AKI Foundation, a non-profit group based in Annapolis, Md., announces that its fifth annual Fish for a Cure Tournament has raised more than $150,000 for cancer research, treatment and care. All proceeds directly benefit the Geaton and JoAnn DeCesaris Cancer Institute at the Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Held Nov. 3 at the Annapolis City Dock and Downtown Annapolis Marriott, the 2012 Fish for a Cure Tournament attracted 44 boats, 160 anglers, and 500 total participants. Many teams exceeded the goal of raising $3,000 per boat, including Sharon Boland’s Club 411/Leave it to Weaver, which raised more than $16,000 to win the tournament’s “Captain’s Challenge” fundraising competition.

“Since its inception, the Fish for a Cure Tournament has continued to grow each and every year, encouraging the community to take a stand against cancer while enjoying a day on the Chesapeake Bay,” said Greg Lilly, chairman of Fish for a Cure’s board of directors. “This year, we exceeded our fundraising goal, thanks to our dedicated members, sponsors, volunteers and donors that make the event a success.”

In 2011, Fish for a Cure made a $1 million pledge to the Breast Center in the JoAnn DeCesaris Cancer Institute at the Anne Arundel Medical Center.
