The 2008 Electronics Emporium
A host of new products and interfaces will keep you plugged in better than ever
Mar 5, 2008
By Capt. Gary P. Joyce (More articles by this author)

The winter boat shows are all but over, and it's time for those who've put away their vessels for the season to haul them out, rigged and ready. The following pages outline some very cool stuff that anglers may want to add to their crafts this year to not only enhance their boating experience but, in some cases, to help catch more fish.

Developments for 2008 seemed to run more along the lines of tweaking existing products. There were exceptions to that, however, which are chronicled over the following pages. We've broken down this new equipment into six general categories: fish finders, navigation, communications, safety, entertainment and miscellaneous.

The fish finder category is fairly self-explanatory — anything having to so with sounders, transducers, etc., will be found here. If you're researching what's new in electronic charts, chart plotters, multifunction screens (MFS), engine monitors or radar, flip to the navigation section. Communications, meanwhile, covers radios, antennas and other products. The safety category contains EPIRBs, Personal Locater Beacons (PLBs), Automatic Identification System (AIS) and the like, while entertainment displays the latest radios, speakers and DVD players. Other products not applicable to those five sections — lighting equipment, for example — can be found in the miscellaneous section.
