It was a most unlikely place to catch a heavy speckled trout: water muddy enough to walk on, too shallow to float across without spooking fish, and colder than a well-stocked ice chest. But when a surface lure splashed above the oyster reef, a fat trout pushing 7 pounds tore into it like a bee-stung bronco. Capt. Jerry Norris, fellow angler Ed Stedman and I were quite surprised to find fish in such conditions, but we drifted that reef for the better part of five hours and ended up catching our limit of 30 trout to 6 1/2 pounds.
