The National Marine Fisheries Service has established recreational angling retention limits for Atlantic bluefin tuna.
Expected to go into effect in early July, the ban covers much of the continental shelf from Cape Mendoncino, California, south to the Mexican border.
After CONAPESCA (Mexican Departmentof Fisheries) created an emergency decree to prohibit shrimptrawlers from working waters within the Alto Golfo BiosphereReserve, Mexican Navy ships confiscated two trawlers and chasedaway many others in late September. Gene Kira reports that thesetrawlers felt safe in raiding biosphere reserve waters because theycarried CONAPESCA permits. The strict enforcement measures made itclear that such illegal practices will no longer betolerated.
