Study Finds “Sweet Spot” on Artificial Reefs: A groundbreaking new survey of Texas’ artificial reefs by the Center for Sportfish Science and Conservation (CSSC) at the Harte Research Institute (HRI) for Gulf of Mexico Studies has found a potential “sweet spot” where prized Red Snapper and other marine life flourish on these transformed oil platforms. The study, published this month in the journal PLOS ONE, is the first to examine fish communities on the Gulf’s complex of artificial reefs on such a large scale. It’s part of a partnership with the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife to study and monitor the state’s artificial reefs. “Texas’ artificial reef program has been around for decades, but because the coast is so expansive and the reef material has been distributed so widely throughout, it’s been difficult to assess,” said Dr. Matt Ajemian, HRI Assistant Research Scientist and lead scientist on the project. “Because of the depth and scale of some of these reef sites, it’s difficult to conduct dive surveys. We developed new methods to survey these sites with remotely operated vehicles (ROV).” Read more about here. Courtesy of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi
*From Keep America Fishing: *Next week, marine fisheries management will be the focus of Congress. Don’t assume your Representative will cast his or her vote in favor of recreational fishing – ask them to do so today. Bill H.R. 1335 will be voted on by the entire U.S. House of Representatives. Its intent is to reauthorize the Magnuson-Stevens Act – the law that governs how our marine fisheries are managed. Proper management equals healthy fisheries – and that means more days on the water for you and your family. H.R. 1335 includes several provisions to improve fishing’s future. Specifically, it would improve recreational fishing data collection, ensure marine fisheries are fairly allocated and stop unnecessary closures based on arbitrary limits. In addition, several amendments that will further improve the bill will also be considered. Tell your Representative to Vote ‘yes’ on these amendments, and ‘yes’ on H.R. 1335. Read more about here. Growing up on the docks of Bud N’ Mary’s Marina in Islamorada, Florida provided Nick Stanczyk with what many would say is a master’s degree in saltwater fishing. Along with his charter-fishing duties out of his family’s famous Keys fishing operation, Stanczyk is now using all the fishing experience to assist with Shimano’s efforts throughout Florida. “As a long-time Shimano supporter – he’s been using Tiagra and the new BeastMaster 9000 reels to target swordfish and other deep-drop species, having Nick on board in an official capacity will definitely help us further grow our saltwater tackle business in Florida, “ said Shimano’s Florida sales rep John Allen. “He’s been involved with pioneering the daytime techniques to target swordfish, and he shares the special passion for saltwater fishing that many of us involved with Shimano also have.” “I’m looking forward to helping out the Shimano crew, doing seminars and demo day visits to tackle dealers throughout Florida, and also doing what I like to do best – catching swordfish during the day on Shimano big-game tackle,” says Capt. Stanczyk. Courtesy of Shimano
