The 2010 National Marine Electronics Association conference in Seattle, Washington, hailed the introduction of Simrad's second-generation broadband sounder module - the first recreational unit to incorporate CHIRP technology. The Simrad BSM-2 coupled with an Airmar broadband transducer uses CHIRP, a frequency-sweeping pulse-compression technology, to transmit a longer, continually modulating signal. Simrad says that results in improved object discrimination at greater depths (even rendering a bottom profile at 10,000 feet), reduction of surface clutter and better resolution.
