Seeing Both Sides

Recreational side-scan sonar images, videos and links from Humminbird, Lowrance and Simrad

In the September/October issue of Sport Fishing, my electronics column focused on side-viewing sonar. I reported that I’m giving both Humminbird and Navico side-scan units a trial run in my home waters of Georgia, aboard my 2200 Pathfinder TE.

Here we commonly fish marsh areas for redfish and trout; we fish the beaches for bull reds and we target tripletail around structure. As I am able to use each unit, I will add to the photo gallery at the top of this page.

My first trial involves Humminbird’s 998c SI Combo; my second will look at the Lowrance StructureScan HD unit. I recorded a video of the Humminbird installation, which I’ve pasted below this text.

To the right of the boat, we can clearly see the four legs of a channel marker. At least three of the white streaks in the image are tripletail. I know because we promptly caught all three. Chris Woodward

As we ventured into the shallows, we could definitely see the oyster reef to either side of our boat and beneath our keel. The structure is unmistakable. Chris Woodward

I only got one shot of this buoy and chain. A few fish seem to be hovering near the chain, but we didn’t hook up.
