Garmin Announces New Point-of-View Action Cameras

Waterproof VIRB shoots high-definition video and high-quality stills

Garmin has introduced its first true HD 1080p action-camera series — the VIRB —, which will be available for purchase in September. The camera itself is IPX-7 waterproof, so it requires no housing for regular use, and its 1.4-inch color display allows for easy playback. Garmin says the VIRB records up to three hours of high-definition video on a charge; the camera features its own onboard video-enhancement features.

VIRBs can capture still photos (up to 16MB) while recording video; they also allow for remote-control functionality with other Garmin products. The VIRB Elite also comes with built-in WiFi, data sensors and GPS.

VIRB’s WideVü lens shoots in wide, medium and narrow modes. The Chroma display uses ambient light, instead of backlight, to illuminate the screen.

An IPX-7 rating allows the camera to withstand accidental immersion in three feet of water for up to 30 minutes. An optional dive case can be purchased to submerge the camera for underwater use. Additional mounts are also available; an industry-standard adapter allows existing action-camera users to employ a variety of other mounts.

VIRBs offer a micro HDMI output for video playback and a microSD slot that holds up to a 64GB card.

VIRB Elites with WiFi allow users to connect to Garmin’s free mobile apps for iPhone and Android. They come with specific activity profiles so users can track location, speed, elevation, heart rate and more while recording.

Other Garmin products such as the quatix GPS watch can control one or more VIRBs remotely, letting users start and stop recording through ANT+ wireless connectivity.

Look for VIRB ($299.99) and VIRB Elite ($399.99) on sale in September. Visit for more information and view the Garmin video below.
