Although a select number of marine journalists saw Mercury’s new Joystick Piloting for Outboards during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last October, the company rolled out the finished version at this winter’s Miami show. The product, available to consumers in July, works with new Verado 250 and 300 outboards.
Yamaha introduced its four-cylinder F200 in late October at the same time it rolled out the new joystick/Helm Master system to fishing and boating writers. While the Helm Master dominated the presentation, the new F200 certainly deserves mention.

The 3.6-liter Honda BF250 — now the company’s flagship outboard — incorporates an all-new gear case and a system called Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC), first introduced in the Acura NSX sports car. VTEC varies the lift and duration of the intake-valve opening to improve performance at all rpm levels. The single-overhead camshaft V6 four-stroke also comes with Honda’s BLAST System for improved hole shot, an adjustable idling-charge system to boost amperage at idle, Lean Burn Control and a marine directair, dualcircuit induction system for better cooling.
