For those who, like me, find fish, fisheries and their management dynamic, often discouraging but always fascinating, I suggest checking out this first-ever national bycatch report from NOAA. Though the report is new, it’s based on the analysis of 2005 data. In any case, it makes for interesting reading. For example, I learned that roughly one out of every six fish caught commercially (17 percent to be specific) is nontargeted bycatch. Read More

In an editorial a few years ago, I asked this question: Would anyone mind if the federal government ordered hundreds of coral reefs around the Florida Keys to be dynamited into rubble and hauled away?
