A group of four adventurous anglers recently joined Bamboo Charters in Islamorada, the Florida Keys, for a few days of exploring the more remote and shallow reaches of upper Florida Bay on Freedom Hawk stand-up kayaks. Bamboo Charters is now offering such trips, taking kayak-fishing enthusiasts by bay boat where relatively few anglers get the chance to fish. For those who, like me, find fish, fisheries and their management dynamic, often discouraging but always fascinating, I suggest checking out this first-ever national bycatch report from NOAA. Though the report is new, it’s based on the analysis of 2005 data. In any case, it makes for interesting reading. For example, I learned that roughly one out of every six fish caught commercially (17 percent to be specific) is nontargeted bycatch. Read More

In an editorial a few years ago, I asked this question: Would anyone mind if the federal government ordered hundreds of coral reefs around the Florida Keys to be dynamited into rubble and hauled away? One hopes the rhetorical nature of that is obvious. Hell, yes! The uproar would be huge, particularly among environmental groups such as the Natural Resources Defense Council. Read More
