Kayak-Fishing Remote Upper Florida Bay

A satisfying catch, this snook was one of very few caught while drifting grass flats or casting the mangroves. Bellinger says the species has not really begun to recover from the devastating Arctic cold of a couple of years ago. Jason Arnold / jasonarnoldphoto.com

A group of four adventurous anglers recently joined Bamboo Charters in Islamorada, the Florida Keys, for a few days of exploring the more remote and shallow reaches of upper Florida Bay on Freedom Hawk stand-up kayaks. Bamboo Charters is now offering such trips, taking kayak-fishing enthusiasts by bay boat where relatively few anglers get the chance to fish. You can read a full report of this trip and what’s involved in a feature coming up in Sport Fishing in the spring of 2012.

Catching the action on camera was Sport Fishing contributing photographer Jason Arnold. More of Arnold’s fabulous fish and fishing images can be seen at www.jasonarnoldphoto.com – and on the cover of the November/December issue of Sport Fishing magazine.

Meanwhile here are 14 images that will offer a taste of this affordable, accessible kayak adventure that offers a new way (for most) to fish these waters.
