Warm-Weather Wonders
by Chris Woodward

Although some parts of the country still expect snow, Southeast anglers are wearing shorts — in early March. This premature spring reminds me that summer vacation lies just a few months down the road. Time to consider where to fish.

I’m torn, ironically enough, between warm and cool. Do I plan to fish a sunny, tropical island in the Bahamas? Or do I head north to Alaska, British Columbia or the Pacific Northwest for salmon and halibut and refreshing daytime temperatures?

I might also stick close to home. From my southern Georgia base, Florida’s Big Bend region is just a few hours’ drive with my trailered Pathfinder; only slightly farther — South and North Carolina or even Louisiana’s rich waters.

As with most of you, my two primary concerns for personal fishing travel include price tag and time. I also consider whether I’d prefer a fishing-only break or a fishing/diving/touristing break and whether I aim to explore new territory or visit a favored location. In other words: Will I take a trip-of-a-lifetime or dabble close to home?

If you’re deliberating the same questions, let us help. The following links offer choices of drive-to destinations as well as increasingly more exotic locales — all from recent print and web pages of Sport Fishing:
