If there's anything more gratifying than discovering a great new product, it's seeing a good existing product made even better. The Furuno GP31 replaces the popular GP30 as a GPS unit the company specifically targets toward smaller boats. Features like the highly visible 4 1/2-inch LCD screen and slim-line waterproof case are maintained, but Furuno incorporated additional modes, functions and capabilities including a built-in training simulator. The 12-channel receiver works with a mini-antenna and can accept DGPS corrections from an external beacon receiver. Furuno also offers a model GP35 Navigator that includes a built-in DGPS beacon receiver for those who prefer to have it all in one box. The GP31's memory has been increased to hold 950 waypoints and 50 routes containing up to 30 waypoints each. You can navigate with your choice of graphic or alphanumeric screens including a track plotter, "highway" display, steering display or nav data display. Two programmable modes allow you to customize the display layout so that the data you're most interested in are shown in large characters. The power-stingy
GP31 draws only 3 watts. Suggested retail is $395 and more information is available from Furuno U.S.A., Camas, WA 98607, 360-834-9300, www.furuno.com.
