Pacific Fins - Guatemala - Fishing Report March 31, 2008

A lot of fish and bait are here!

Capt. Ron Hamlin - Pacific Fins Resort - Guatemala Fishing Report - March 31, 2008

On the 21st we had Nesbitt Family, Bruce, Harry, and Brent all from Ambler PA, and they fished on the Circle Hook with Capt. Eddie. This was their first time here in Guatemala and for the 3 days we ended up with 35 Sails out of 42 bites and raised 50 Sails total. They all said it was their best trip ever!!

On March 20 - 22 the Stuart group, including dad and his two sons, John and Jody, and there friend George came down to fish on the Captain Hook. The weather was not very cooperative as we had another late season cold front move through. On the 20th we raised 16 sails, had 14 bites and released 7. We also had a nice blue marlin, estimated at 200 plus pounds, tagged and released by Dad

March 22 - 24 we saw our more normal March flat seas for the Dominguez family from Texas, fishing aboard the Hooked Up with Capt. Haron. Mr. Dominguez said that in four years they only caught one sail and just a few marlin, so to them day one was like a dream come true with 20 Sails raised, 17 bites and 14 caught .Day two we had a slower day as we raised 16 Sails, had 13 bites and caught 8, including one double header on Sails with the 73 year old grandmother and 12 year old grandson Jacob. The same day we raised two blue marlin with no bites. Day three was a learning day. Mr. Dominguez caught his first sail on fly! Congratulations! On this trip every one in this family caught there first sailfish. On day three we had 27 raised, 20 bites and caught 8 on bait and one on the fly.

On March 24th we had Bill Lambert and his 2 sons aboard the Captain Hook. Bill's sons had never caught a sail before. We were fishing a modified version of bait with a hook in one rigger and teaser's short so we could also fly fish. We had a great day raising 31 Sails with 23 of those biting the bait and releasing 15. On the Fly side there was a lot of bait and the fish didn't tease well. We had 5 bites on the Fly and released 3. The 2 sons who had never sailfished caught their first on Bait and Fly and Dad had 1 on Fly and a few on bait.

Aboard the Circle Hook on March 26th we started a 3 day trip with Bill Long. He brought his daughter, Irene, and his 5 Grand daughters, and we shared this group with the Hooked Up. Our first day we had Irene, Heather and Julia and they released 16 out of 21 bites and raising 26.

Day 2 was the best day of the trip. Cassy, Karly and Heather helped Bill with this big day. We had a total of 30 Sails released, 41 bites and raising 51! It was a great day that made it special for the children, with little Heather, a 12yr old, as the best angler!

Day 3 Julia, Heather and Little Haley, 11 yrs old, joined Bill to have another great day on the Circle Hook. Once again, little Heather was my special angler. Every time she was up we had a multiple hook up! We ended the day with 22 releases out of 28 bites and we raised 32. We had a total of 68 Sails in 3 days! This was a really special trip for Bill's Grandchildren. They all had so much fun!!!!

Meanwhile the rest of the story belonged to the Hooked Up, the family's second boat. Captain Haron reported that for 3 days it was unreal. Fish were every were you looked, on the surface feeding, free jumping, and tailing. The first day it was pretty rough until noon and then it laid back to flat calm. The second and third day it was flat calm like a lake. Unfortunately, the Sails were just not biting all that aggressively. We had a lot of them just look and then fade away, so our average was not that good. There was just too much bait around.

On day one we raised 33, had 31 bites and caught 14. On day two we raised 52, had 44 bites and caught 24. On day three, we raised 50 Sails, had 43 bites and caught 26. All in all it was really great fishing and a very exciting 3 days on the water for this group.

Back on the Captain Hook on March 27th, we had Charles Wildeman, and his son and grandson. We had a wonderful day with flat calm seas. We raised 42 Sails, had 31 bites and released 17. The grandson who is 9 did a heck of a job catching 4 and we managed to tag them all.

March 28th brought us another great day of weather. The Wildeman boys had another very good day raising 40 sails, with 32 bites and releasing 20. The grandson Emanuel is only 8 years old and he caught 7 today and had 5 tagged. There are lots of Sails and a few Blues around. There is also a lot of bait, too much in fact, which makes the fish less aggressive.

The wind came back unfortunately on the 29th and 30th and the fishing results were not as good as the last few days. There are plenty of fish here though, so as soon as conditions improve, so will the fishing!

We still have a few dates available for the next couple of months and don't forget that May usually starts our best season for Marlin.

Summer rates with big 40% discounts start June 1st, so call Rick Hazelwood at (888) 700-3467 today to book your trip.
