2009 Fishing Gear Premiere

A roundup of cutting-edge tackle and accessories

Pflueger Medalist Spin
Anglers struggle to find spinning reels that hold up to serious use and deliver a smooth drag with lighter line. Pflueger says it solved those issues in an affordable way with the new Medalist spinners.

The Medalist's drive train is supported by stainless-steel ball bearings with a one-way clutch bearing for instant anti-reverse. Pflueger completely sealed the bearings supporting the main and pinion gears for longer life in salt water. The multi-disk carbon-fiber front drag system is also sealed, ensuring that water may not enter to corrode the drag plates.

Pflueger built the frame and rotor from lightweight aluminum; the spool and free spare spool feature the company's long-cast design and anodized aluminum construction.

Medalists come in eight models, ranging from ultra-light (115 yards of 4-pound) to medium-heavy (240 yards of 25-pound). They weigh from 10 to 27.2 ounces and  feature gear ratios of 4.6-to-1 to 5.3-to-1. Retail cost is $89.95. Call 800-554-4653, or visit www.pflueger-fishing.com.
