2009 Fishing Gear Premiere

A roundup of cutting-edge tackle and accessories

Okuma Solterra
Built light yet powerful and fast, Okuma's new Solterra graphite lever-drag reels come in two popular styles - open-top, high-speed conventional reels and right- or left-handed levelwinds. Open reels feature a speedy 6.2-to-1 gear ratio, capable of picking up 41 inches of line per crank, while the levelwinds offer 4.2-to-1 with a line-retrieval rate of 28 inches.

Okuma builds Solterras with graphite frames, side plates and aluminum spools. The carbon-fiber drag system uses Cal's 2- Speed Gear and Drag Grease. Oversized gear boxes contain machine-cut stainless-steel gearing.

The open-top reel comes in two models: The smaller holds 460 yards of 15-pound mono to 280 yards of 25; the larger carries 550 yards of 20-pound mono to 310 yards of 30. They cost $129.99 each.

The levelwinds also come in two models (opt for right- or left-handed versions) with the same line capacities as the open reels. These cost $139.99 each. Call 800-466-5862, or visit www.okumafishing.com.
